Why is my hair still yellow after purple shampoo? ›

Use purple shampoo correctly

Just like clarifying shampoo, it isn't advised that you use purple shampoo after a fresh toner. Purple shampoo can actually strip the hair of the toner, which will likely leave you with a mixture of yellow, ashy and grey tones throughout your hair.

By looking at color theory and choosing the opposite color of your hair in the color wheel, such as purple or blue shades, you can neutralize the yellow and orange. This method gives the impression of cooler tones without affecting the pigments in a permanent way.

After toning, you can use purple shampoo and mask to get rid of any remaining yellow.

If your hair absorbs the water in less than ten seconds, your cuticle is compromised and your strands are too damaged to stand up to bleach. Also, if your hair feels overly stretchy when wet, our condolences, but hold off on any procedures that could cause breakage.

Let the shampoo sit on your hair for 2-3 minutes if you're a natural blonde or 15 minutes for brassy color-treated hair. For gray or platinum hair, wait 30 minutes. Rinse out the shampoo thoroughly with cool water and follow with your favorite conditioner.

If the purple shampoo hasn't made a difference in your hair after one month of using it, then you can increase your usage to 2-3 times a week.

Buy an ammonia-based toner at a beauty supply store.

Be sure to choose a purple-based shade, which will be marked on the bottle. Toners can have blue, purple, or green base colors. To fix yellow hair, you want purple. Since yellow and purple are opposite on the color wheel, they neutralize each other when combined.

Ash cancels the yellow. But make sure to only apply the ash product on the hair that you bleached that are yellow. The ends of your hair are usually much light and will absorb the ash color much quicker than the roots.

If you have blond hair, try lightening it with lemon juice. If your hair is blond, grey, or white, use an apple cider vinegar rinse or a baking soda-hydrogen peroxide paste. Once you get the yellow out, you can prevent it from returning with a few changes to your personal care routine.

With my hair, I usually like to leave around 20-30min. Usually depends on how brassy yellow my bleached hair is before putting on. I like to make sure the toner gets dark enough to where I see no more yellow or orangey brassiness from the bleach. It's usually around 30min but I've left up to 45min.

With blonde dyes, it is common that your hair will get either an orange or yellow tint. This is because most hair dyes are made up of blue, yellow, and red tones. Blue color fades the fastest, leaving you with yellow and red leftovers. With blonde dye, this shows up as yellow.

Clarifying shampoos are designed to remove product buildup, excess oils, and impurities from the hair. They also work effectively in removing excess toner and restoring a more balanced hair tone.

It's best if you don't go up more than four levels in one sitting. You can go four more levels up after two-three weeks to get the lighter hair shade of your choice. Going from dark to light too quickly can cause your hair to become dry, brittle, and weak.

This is one of the most important hair care tips because hair that is brittle, dry or breaking, should not be bleached. Also make sure your scalp health is in tip-top shape.

When used with bleach, 20 volume is a powerful tool lifting 1-9 levels depending on the bleach, method of application, and hair type/history. 20 volume is the highest level of developer that should be used on the scalp with bleach as the scalp produces more heat and increases the power of the developer.

If you are a brunette and see more orange in your hair, remember blue + orange are complimentary. This means purple shampoo will do nothing for you, because you need blue to cancel out the orange. DO NOT BUY BLUE SHAMPOO WITHOUT CONSULTING YOUR STYLIST. If a true blonde uses blue shampoo: blue + yellow= green.

Sometimes you need to bleach your hair to a lighter level and then apply a toner to darken it and remove any remaining yellow. Even if you have your hair done at the hairdresser, yellow tones can appear after a few washes as the toner used to remove the unwanted yellow tones fades away.

Just use regular or clarifying shampoo. Depending on the permanent color used, it may fade a little bit but won't take all of it out. The blue and purple pigments are temporary toners and should fade significantly with each use of a normal everyday shampoo.

You can definitely overuse purple shampoo, and the effects are hard to miss. Frequently sudsing up with purple shampoo can give your strands a slightly purple tint. In case you overdo it (we've all been there), your go-to clarifying shampoo can help fade the unwelcome tinge.
